Luxury Home Features

An interesting phenomena we’re seeing is the reversal of the “less is more” mentality, and “luxury” and “estates” are staging a comeback!  Whether you’re looking to buy a luxury estate or just want to add a little splash of luxury to your own home, I thought it would be fun to share my top 10 picks of luxury features and amenities in bay area homes, and as no coincidence, these are the most requested and appreciated by my clients.

  1. Gated and Private Acreage – there’s something about a gate that says, ‘what lies behind here is very special and very exclusive’.  Nine times out of ten, there is, with well manicured landscaping and fountains.  Privacy is highly prized by many luxury homeowners.
  2. Views – being able to look out over the valley’s city lights or a canyon or the surrounding mountains is a highly valued feature!
  3. Wine Cellar – we’re surrounded by wine country so it’s inevitable that you’d start your own collection if you don’t already have one.
  4. Pool – not just any pool, an infinity pool is preferred, where the pool is perched on the side of the hill (with the views).  Or if there’s no view then it should have a water feature (think fountains flowing into it).
  5. Fully Disappearing Wall of Windows – the extension of the outdoors to the indoors with floor to ceiling glass doors that open on themselves and hide into the walls are highly appreciated and so unique to the area’s lifestyle.
  6. Guest Quarters – There’s typically a fully appointed guest cottage on the property, over the garage, or attached to the garage for extended family and friends to stay.
  7. Home Gym – the convenience of not having to leave home for your daily workout is another highly prized feature.
  8. Home Theater – another amenity that lets everyone huddle at home is the home theater room.  Add to it several super comfy lounge chairs with a bar and kitchen for snacks and beverages, along with a massive screen and a top of the line speaker system.
  9. Outdoor Kitchen and Fireplace / Firepit – these two separate areas typically have wisteria covered trellises over them to provide a little shade while you’re relaxing or dining by the fireplace / firepit or hanging out at the outdoor kitchen and bar area that has a wood-fired Italian pizza oven, massive barbeque grill, fridge, sink and weather-resistant flat screen TV.
  10. Massive Custom Garage – usually there’s a 4+ car garage for the family cars, SUV, sports cars and naturally all the toys, sports equipment and stuff (since there’s rarely a basement or walk up attic in California homes).
